The United Nations in Sri Lanka along with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other Member States represented in Colombo hosted a virtual commemoration of the International Day of Vesak Watch here.

In 1999, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted Resolution 554/115, moved by Hon. Lakshman Kadirgamar the then Sri Lankan Foreign Minister. The Resolution was cosponsored by over 30 member states. Vesak Day is now internationally accorded as a United Nations Observance Day.
Today, the United Nations in Sri Lanka, together with the people of Sri Lanka and those around the world come together to celebrate Vesak Day, resonating the words of the Buddha, that the path to end suffering is through, understanding, compassion, kindness, empathy and self-reflection.
