G. S. Withanage has been appointed as the 8th Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) today.
Vithanage received his basic education from Ananda Vidyalaya, Colombo, and then obtained his first degree from Sri Jayawardenepura University and a postgraduate degree in business administration from Colombo University.
Vithanage joined the public service as an assistant director of the Public Administration Ministry in 1984. He worked as an assistant director for the Ceylon Sugar Corporation, the Public Security Ministry, the Media Ministry, Tourism, Aviation, Transport, Highways, Rehabilitation, Prisons, Resettlement, Foreign Employment, and Transport.
He also served as the secretary of the civil aviation ministry.
In addition to the above, he has been engaged in public service for over 37 years, serving as the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Petroleum Corporation and Sri Lankan Airlines.
