U.S. Embassy Marks 15 Years of American Corner Jaffna, Launches “Freedom 250 Pavilion”
The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka has marked the 15th anniversary of American Corner Jaffna, underscoring its role in fostering educational and cultural engagement in Northern Sri Lanka.
The anniversary event, held on April 26, also saw the inauguration of the “Freedom 250 Pavilion,” part of a global initiative commemorating 250 years of independence of the United States.
Established in 2011 in partnership with the Jaffna Social Action Center, American Corner Jaffna was created to strengthen connections between local communities and the United States. The centre has since served as a hub for learning, offering programmes focused on English language skills, leadership development, critical thinking, and innovation, particularly in the post-conflict context of Northern Sri Lanka.
The newly launched Freedom 250 Pavilion is expected to expand the Corner’s capacity to host interactive programmes and community events, enhancing its role as a collaborative space for dialogue and knowledge exchange.
Speaking at the event, Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy, Menaka Nayyar, highlighted the significance of the milestone and the broader initiative. She noted that the United States will mark 250 years of independence on July 4, 2026, and emphasised the importance of sharing American values, culture, and innovation through platforms such as American Corner Jaffna.
In 2025, the centre conducted nearly 400 programmes, reaching over 10,000 participants. Located in Nallur, Jaffna, American Corner Jaffna offers free access to educational resources, including information on studying in the United States and skill-building opportunities.
Members of the public can participate in its programmes by visiting the centre or connecting through its official communication channels.
