CDB Introduces Sri Lanka’s First QR Sound Box to Boost Digital Payments
Citizens Development Business Finance PLC has launched Sri Lanka’s first QR-enabled Sound Box, a device designed to enhance digital payment adoption and support financial inclusion, particularly among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The Sound Box delivers real-time voice confirmations for QR-based transactions, enabling merchants to instantly verify payments without relying on mobile devices. The solution aims to improve convenience, increase transaction transparency, and build greater trust between merchants and customers.
Developed as a dual-purpose payment tool, the device supports QR payments and is equipped with built-in card acceptance capability. CDB noted that card payment functionality will be introduced in line with its future digital payment roadmap.
The introduction of the QR Sound Box is expected to encourage wider adoption of cashless payments in traditionally cash-heavy environments such as local markets, fairs, and temporary retail setups. By simplifying payment verification, the device helps reduce errors and enhances operational efficiency for merchants.
Commenting on the launch, Chief Sales and Digital Business Officer at CDB, Hasitha Dassanyake, said the initiative reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to driving digital innovation in financial services. He noted that the solution addresses key challenges related to transaction visibility and trust, while supporting Sri Lanka’s broader shift towards a cash-lite economy.
CDB’s latest innovation forms part of its wider strategy to expand digital financial solutions and strengthen access to modern payment technologies across the country.
