SriLankan Airlines has introduced ‘Green Carpets’ for aeroplanes to reduce plane weight and increase fuel efficiency.

The airline said that the use of green carpets will help save Rs. 21 million annually.

These carpets will contribute to reducing carbon emissions and reduce environmental damage by 248.79 tonnes.

These green carpets are lightweight and are made from a special type of nylon that is processed by recycling discarded fishing nets, plastic and fabric with the minimum use of fuel and water. They are produced in Switzerland by “Lantal Textiles”.

This is another positive step that SriLankan Airlines has taken to protect the global environment, and this airline became the first airline in Asia to have such a programme (Planet Friendly Flights) in 2009.

Also, in 2016, SriLankan Airline was chosen as the second-lowest carbon-emitting airline in the Asia-Pacific region by Business Traveller.
