Expect heavy rains above 100 mm and Strong Winds due to low pressure area in Bay of Bengal. Possible Floods

Prevailed low-level atmospheric disturbance over south-east of Sri Lanka and adjoining south-west Bay of Bengal has developed into a low pressure area and currently located in east of the Sri Lanka.

Cloudy skies can be expected over the island. Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Northern, North-Central, Eastern and Uva provinces and in Matale district. Showers or thundershowers will occur in several places elsewhere during the afternoon or night.

Massive rainfall of 219 mm reported in Erepola – AWS ( Rathnapura) last 24 hour.

Sluice gates of Deduru Oya and Spill gates of several reservoirs opened.

Heavy showers above 100 mm can be expected at some places in Northern, North-central, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces and in Puttalam and Trincomalee districts.

Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm can be expected at some places elsewhere.

There is a high probability of occurring flood situations in lowline flood prone areas of several rivers.

National Building Research Organization NBRO issued landslides alert 1 and 2 for several districts due to prevailing rainy condition. NBRO issued landslides alert for Colombo, Kalutara, Kandy, Kurunegala , Matale, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura due to prevailing rains.

There can be very heavy showers or thundershowers, strong winds (40-50) kmph gusting up to 60 kmph associated with rough seas over the aforementioned sea area and the sea areas around the Island.

Naval and fishing communities out at sea over South-West Bay of Bengal, deep and shallow sea areas around the Island are advised to be vigilant in this regard during next few days.
