Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is expected to increase up to ‘Caution’ level at some places in North-western, Western and Southern provinces and Ratnapura District.

As the heatwave continues to grip the nation, health officials are urging caution, particularly among children, athletes, and those spending significant time outdoors. Temperature records of several districts projected to exceed 32°C. Colombo may soar to a scorching 35°C, while Ratnapura is set to reach 35°C. 

Maximum temperature of 36.9°C reported in Katunayake area during last 24 hours.

In anticipation of the prevailing high atmospheric temperatures set to further rise on February 29 and the day after, the Education Ministry has issued a directive to all school authorities. In the advisory, schools are instructed not to send students out into the open for extended periods. The decision aims to prioritize student well-being and safety amidst the escalating heatwave. Authorities are urged to take necessary precautions and ensure students remain indoors during peak temperature hours. Parents are advised to stay informed about school protocols during this period and support measures to safeguard students from the extreme heat.

Health officials request the general public to consume more water, due to the hot weather condition prevailing these days. They further say that drinking less water could lead to dehydration easily and advised children, athletes and those who stay outdoors often to hydrate themselves.

Several spells of showers will occur in Eastern, Uva and North central provinces and in Nuwara-Eliya and Matale districts. Showers or thundershowers may occur atseveral places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kandy, Galle and Matara districts in the evening or night.

Fairly strong winds about (30-40) kmph can be expected at times in eastern slopes of the central hills and in Northern, North-central, North-western, Southern,Uvaand Easternprovinces.

The public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize the damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
