Widespread Rainfall Expected Across Sri Lanka Over Next 10 Days

The Department of Meteorology has forecast widespread rainfall across Sri Lanka over the next 10 days, warning of possible heavy rain, landslides and flooding.

Speaking at a special media briefing today (16), Director General of the Department of Meteorology Ajith Wijemanna urged the public and relevant authorities to remain prepared for deteriorating weather conditions as the country enters a period of increased rainfall.

Wijemanna said preparations are already underway to mitigate the effects of prevailing El Niño conditions, but additional measures are needed in view of forecasts for heavy rainfall and related hazards.

He said heavy rainfall is expected particularly during October and November, when flooding and landslides could occur. Atmospheric disturbances frequently develop around the Bay of Bengal during this period and may intensify under the influence of El Niño conditions.

He also warned that increased rainfall is expected in the northeastern parts of the country during December and called on the public and authorities to remain vigilant.

Meanwhile, average rainfall is forecast for the Northern and Eastern provinces. However, Wijemanna noted that certain Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) conditions could increase the risk of flooding in those areas.

Looking ahead to February, March and April next year, higher temperatures and relatively lower rainfall are expected.

Wijemanna stressed the importance of effectively managing the rainfall received across the country in the coming months to prepare for changing weather conditions.
