The Sri Lanka Navy rendered assistance to the barge ‘Atulya’, towed by tug ‘Avadh’, en route to India from the Maldives, which had drifted to the Nadukuda coast south of Mannar with nine crew members who are Indian and Indonesian nationals.

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Chennai had notified MRCC in Colombo about a mechanical issue on the Tug ‘Avadh’ drifting along with the barge ‘Atulya’ towards Sri Lankan waters due to adverse weather conditions.

“The distressed tug and barge drifted towards the Nadukuda beach area south of Mannar, owing to the rough seas and strong winds. As per the procedure, necessary measures are currently underway to fix the tug, under the coordination of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo at the Navy Headquarters,” the Sri Lanka Navy said.

They added that they are prepared to provide necessary assistance to the crew of the distressed tug,and remain vigilant to tackle emergencies and provide essential support.
