Sri Lanka Faces Rising Heat as Sun Moves Directly Over Island

Sri Lanka is experiencing a period of increased heat as the Sun moves southward and passes directly over the island’s latitudes between August 28 and September 7, according to the latest weather information.

The nearest areas to Sri Lanka where the Sun will be directly overhead today (August 30) are Mannar, Periyamadu, Puliyankulam, Welioya and Pulmoddai, at around 12:11 p.m. local time.

Temperatures are expected to exceed 30°C in many parts of the country, while the heat index the temperature as felt by the human body could reach the “Caution” level in parts of the Eastern Province and in the districts of Polonnaruwa, Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya and Monaragala during daytime hours.

Authorities are urging the public to take precautions against the heat. People working outdoors should stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in shaded areas. Residents are also advised to check on elderly and vulnerable people, while children should never be left unattended inside vehicles.

People spending time outdoors are advised to limit strenuous activities, seek shade, drink plenty of water and wear lightweight, white or light-coloured clothing.

Meanwhile, showers are expected at times in Sabaragamuwa Province and in Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts, with several spells of showers possible in the Western and North-Western provinces.

Showers or thundershowers may develop in a few locations in Uva Province and in Ampara, Batticaloa and Hambantota districts after 2 p.m. Mainly dry weather is expected elsewhere.

Strong winds of around 40–50 km/h may occur at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, as well as in Trincomalee, Monaragala, Hambantota and Matale districts.

The public has been advised to take necessary precautions to minimize the risk of damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
