Local Government Week Begins Across Sri Lanka
Six-Day Programme to Address Community Needs and Promote Local Services
Local Government Week will commence across Sri Lanka today (14), with the participation of local government institutions across all districts, Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government Professor A.H.M.H. Abayarathna said.
The six-day programme will continue until September 19, with the national-level launch taking place in Ruwanwella in the Kegalle District.
The initiative has been organised to address a wide range of issues affecting the public, including environmental and health concerns, infrastructure needs, education, literature and other community-related matters.
Today has been designated “Mobile Services and Revenue Promotion Day.” Under the programme, government officials will visit communities to provide services based on local needs, reducing the need for people to travel to ministries and Divisional Secretariat offices.
September 15 will be observed as “Public Utilities and Infrastructure Day,” focusing on maintaining existing infrastructure and introducing new facilities where necessary.
Environmental conservation activities will take place on September 16 under the theme “A Plant for Tomorrow and Tree Planting.” Schoolchildren and young people will participate in tree-planting and other environmental programmes, including the removal of plastic waste and garbage from public areas.
September 17 will focus on “Health, Sanitation and Dengue Prevention.” Community-based dengue prevention programmes will be conducted, particularly in preparation for the increased risk of dengue associated with the upcoming rainy season.
September 18 has been designated “Literature, Education, Libraries, Welfare and Sports Day.” Programmes will be held to promote literary appreciation and showcase the creative work of schoolchildren and young people, alongside educational, welfare and sporting activities.
The final day, September 19, will focus on recognising public servants, institutions and community organisations that have made outstanding contributions to their communities. Certificates of recognition will also be presented, while assistance will be provided to selected beneficiaries.
Minister Abayarathna said plans have been prepared to implement a range of community-based programmes aimed at addressing rural and local-level issues while encouraging the active participation of the public in finding solutions.
