After 2015 January month, inflation rate in Sri Lanka has reached the highest percentage this January. The National Consumer Price Index, (NCPI) which measures inflation increased by 16.8 per cent (year-on-year).

Inflation was driven by monthly increases of prices of items in both Food and Non-food categories. Accordingly, within the Food category, prominent increases were observed in prices of Rice, Milk Powder, Fresh Fruits, Fish and vegetables. Further, prices of items in the Non-Food category recorded increases mainly due to price increases observed in the Transport, Restaurants and Hotels, Gas & Fuels, and Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (Arrack, Betel leaves) sub-categories during the month.
