The official website of the Sri Lanka Education Ministry, https://moe.gov.lk, fell victim to a cyberattack on April 4. Upon discovery of the breach, the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team and the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority swiftly initiated measures to restore the compromised website. Presently, visitors to the site are showed with a message indicating temporary unavailability due to scheduled maintenance, with an apology for any inconvenience caused.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by cyber threats and the critical need for robust security measures to protect vital online infrastructure.
The breach, attributed to an entity operating under the pseudonym “Anonymous EEE,” left the website compromised and inaccessible to users.
The hacker, claiming to be an A-Level student, took responsibility for the unauthorized access and left a message on the website. Expressing remorse for the breach, the individual highlighted security vulnerabilities within the site, citing concerns for the safety of the nation. The message read, “My name is Anonymous EEE and I am currently studying A/l. Sorry for unauthorized access to your website but your website has some security flaws. As a Sri Lankan citizen, I am reporting this for the safety of my country. Fix it thanks.” (LankaXpress.com )
