The All-Island Three-Wheeler Drivers’ Union (AITWDU) today said that three-wheeler fares will be increased in January if petrol prices increase after imposing the new value-added tax (VAT) at the rate of 18%.

AITWDU president Lalith Dharmasekera told that there is a possibility of petrol prices increasing by more than Rs. 50 from January, and if that happened, the charges for the first kilometer would increase according to the fuel price.

“We did not take any measures to have fare revisions in the previous occasions where the government had increased petrol prices. But this time we cannot remain so. We have to increase the fares according to the price increases.

“But there is an issue of how the passengers can afford the increased prices,” he added.
