New Weekend Newspaper ‘Rana Monara’ Launched in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — A new national weekend newspaper, Rana Monara (Golden Peacock), has been launched in Sri Lanka by Kasagala Media Network (Pvt) Ltd., with its first edition published on September 13.

The launch comes at a challenging time for Sri Lanka’s traditional print media industry, which has faced significant financial and operational pressures in recent years. Several daily and weekend newspapers have either discontinued their printed editions or shifted their operations primarily to digital platforms.

Despite these challenges, Rana Monara has entered the market with a focus on providing trusted and responsible journalism to the public.

According to the newspaper’s editorial statement, Sri Lanka’s media landscape is currently facing challenges arising from misleading content, baseless allegations and defamatory remarks that can influence public opinion.

The newspaper says its objective is not only to provide reliable news and information but also to contribute to a more responsible media environment.

Another stated aim of Rana Monara is to serve as a bridge between the public, rulers and decision-makers, helping facilitate communication and greater understanding between those who govern and the people.

The launch of the new publication comes as Sri Lankan audiences increasingly consume news through websites, social media and other digital platforms, while the country’s established print media sector continues to navigate changing reader habits and economic pressures.

Rana Monara is expected to operate alongside its digital presence as it seeks to establish itself in Sri Lanka’s evolving media landscape. (LankaXpress.com )
