Department of Meteorology – Sri Lanka issued Strong Winds and Rough seas Advisory until 6 p.m. October 12 for the deep and shallow sea areas around Sri Lanka. Two cyclonic circulations in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal each will bring in strong winds over coming days.

Wind speed can be increased up to 70 kmph in the sea area off south and southeast of Sri Lanka and deep sea areas of southwest Bay of Bengal. These sea area will be very rough at times. These sea areas may experience surges due to the effect of swell waves, having (2.5-3.0) m height.


Naval and fishing communities are advised to be vigilant in this regards.

Heavy rains above 100 mm can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Northwestern provinces and Galle and Matara districts during next 24 hours.


General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Wind speed can be increased up to 50 kmph at times in the western slope of central hills, Northern, North-Central and Southern provinces and in Trincomalee district.
