Colombo, Sri Lanka – National People’s Power (NPP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake is set to take oaths as the Ninth Executive President of Sri Lanka today. The swearing-in ceremony will take place before the Chief Justice, following his official election victory.
Dissanayake’s election marks a pivotal moment in Sri Lanka’s political landscape, with the NPP securing a significant win in 14 out of 22 districts. His main rival, Sajith Premadasa, leader of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), managed to secure only eight districts in the tightly contested race.
According to official results from the first count, Dissanayake obtained 5,634,915 votes, while Premadasa garnered 4,363,035 votes. Following the second count, Dissanayake’s total climbed to 5,740,179 votes, including 105,264 preferential votes. Premadasa’s final tally reached 4,530,902 votes, with 167,867 preferential votes added during the second count.
