Police arrested several students who were protesting against the proposed Kotelawala University KNDU bill says IUSF says. According to police sources 31 protestors including Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union Joseph Stalin have been arrested for engage in a protest by violating quarantine rules.
The Consultative Committee on Defence recently agreed to present the General Sir John Kotelawala National Defence University Bill to Parliament for the second reading today. Meanwhile Political parties, civil society, lecturers, students, trade unions and other groups in Sri Lanka are protesting against the bill and have called on the government to withdraw the proposed Kotelawala University Bill which they fear could pave the way for privatisation of the higher education sector and militarisation of universities.
