2022 Kandy Esala Perahera commenced on July 29 and will last till August 12 in Kandy, Sri Dalada Maligawa. This year, Kandy Esala Perahera will be held with the participation of spectators. Last 2 years Perahera was not allowed for spectators due to COVID outbreak in Sri Lanka.

About 100 elephants and about 5000 traditional artists including dancers to perform at the procession. Kandy Esala Perahera Procession consider as one of the world’s oldest religious festivals.

2022 Kandy Esala Perahera commenced on July 29 with the traditional “Kap” planting ceremony at the four Maha Devalayas said Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela.

The “Kap” planting ceremony held at the four great temples of Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama and Pattini at the auspicious time of 3.03 am.

After “Kap” planting in the four great Devales, five Devale peraheras (processions) will be held for the next five nights.

Starting the Esala Festival the first Kumbal Perahera will take to the streets on August 02 and parade the streets for five days until the August 6th.

First Randoli Perahera will take to the streets on August 07the after a five day Kumbal Perahera.

The final Randoli Perahera will be held on the Nikini Full Poya Day on 11th August and the Kandy Esala Perahera will conclude with a daytime Perahera and water cutting ceremony on the following day with the presentation the Sandeshaya to the President at the President’s House in Kandy.
