Unity is Our Greatest Strength: Miss World Sri Lanka Anudi Gunasekara Issues Stirring Independence Day Message
COLOMBO – Marking the 78th National Independence Day, Sri Lanka’s representative to the Miss World pageant, Anudi Gunasekara, shared a powerful message of resilience and national unity, urging citizens to look past divisions to rebuild the country.
Reflecting on the nation’s journey, Gunasekara highlighted the legendary strength of the Sri Lankan people, who have persevered through decades of conflict, economic hardships, and natural disasters.
“Sri Lankans are incredibly strong. We have faced numerous challenges—war, natural disasters, and economic crises—but we have never allowed them to defeat us,” she stated.
The beauty queen made special mention of the recent devastating storms that swept across the island, noting that while many lost their livelihoods and possessions, the spirit of the community remained unbroken. She pointed out that the way ordinary citizens stepped up to support one another during the crisis is the “noblest quality” of the Sri Lankan identity.
Closing her message with a call to action, Gunasekara emphasized that this inherent compassion should be the foundation for the country’s future.
“We can build Sri Lanka by wearing that quality as our greatest ornament. Let us set aside differences of race, caste, and religion, and truly stand up for one another,” she added.
Her message has resonated widely on social media, serving as a reminder of the collective strength required to navigate the nation’s path forward as it celebrates 78 years of independence.
