Free Media Movement Calls for Impartial, Expedited Probe into Incident Involving Ranil’s Security Officer and Cameraman
COLOMBO, Oct. 2, 2026: The Free Media Movement (FMM) has called for an impartial, neutral and expedited investigation into an incident involving a security officer attached to former President Ranil Wickremesinghe and a cameraman outside the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.
The incident occurred on September 30 as Wickremesinghe was leaving the court following proceedings. According to reports, the security officer was allegedly assaulted by a cameraman covering the former President’s court appearance. The officer was subsequently admitted to the Colombo National Hospital and lodged a complaint with the police.
The cameraman was summoned to the Kompannavidiya Police Station on October 1 to record a statement and was subsequently arrested, according to the Police Media Spokesperson. Multiple reports have confirmed the arrest, while police investigations into the incident are continuing.
In a statement issued on October 1, the FMM said both security personnel and journalists have important professional responsibilities. It said security officers have a duty to protect individuals under their charge, while journalists have a responsibility to safeguard the public’s right to information.
The organisation stressed that both sides should recognise each other’s responsibilities and conduct themselves with mutual understanding while respecting professional dignity.
The FMM said the allegation involving a journalist should not be treated lightly, particularly given the professional background of the person involved and the wider public attention surrounding the incident.
It therefore called for the investigation to be conducted impartially, independently and without delay, with the necessary action taken based on the findings.
The incident reportedly took place near the entrance to the Fort Magistrate’s Court, where other media personnel were also present. Police have yet to release findings establishing the full circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
