Egg producers say that there is no problem in providing an egg at the price of 50 rupees. They point out that an egg can be sold for that amount according to the cost of production.

The egg producers have expressed these views in a meeting held with Trade Minister Nalin Fernando on Saturday ( Dec 10) to discuss the current supply of eggs in the market.

The maximum retail price of a white egg has been set at 43 rupees and a brown egg at 45 rupees.

The producers have pointed out that the Covid epidemic situation, the fuel shortage that existed throughout the past period, and the rapid increase in the prices of animal feed including soy, corn, etc. have adversely affected the egg production industry, and therefore the egg production has decreased, and the decrease in the supply of eggs in the market is a result of that.

Commenting on animal feed, Minister Nalin Fernando said that the prices of animal feed are decreasing and that the prices will further decrease in the future.

The Ministry of Trade said the minister instructed the government officials to take the necessary steps to provide loans to the producers to reduce the costs in order to increase the supply of eggs in the market.
