Islandwide Rains Expected From October 1; Heavy Showers Forecast

Atmospheric conditions are becoming increasingly favourable for afternoon thundershowers across most parts of Sri Lanka from October 1, according to the Department of Meteorology.

The Meteorological Department’s extended 15-day forecast indicates a widespread rainfall pattern across the island through October 15, with rainfall of around 1–5 mm expected in many areas during the period.

The forecast indicates that rainfall could become heavier from October 3 to 6, with some areas potentially receiving around 50 mm or more.

Showers or thundershowers are expected at several places in the Uva, Eastern and Central provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa and Mullaittivu districts, particularly after 1.00 p.m. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is possible in some locations.

A few showers may also occur during the morning in coastal areas of the Western Province and in the Galle and Matara districts.

Misty conditions are also expected in some areas of the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces during the early morning hours.

The public has been advised to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning that may occur during thundershowers.

The Department of Meteorology has also urged the public to remain alert to changing weather conditions, particularly during afternoon and evening thunderstorms.

The current Department of Meteorology forecast confirms the expected afternoon showers/thundershowers in Uva, Eastern and Central provinces, Polonnaruwa and Mullaittivu, along with the lightning and strong-wind precaution.
