In response to the high demand and shortage of eggs anticipated during the Christmas and New Year festive season, the Sri Lanka State Trading Corporation has announced the impending arrival of a consignment of 15 million imported eggs. The consignment is expected to reach the island on the evening of December 17, as confirmed by the Chairman of the Sri Lanka State Trading Corporation.

Trade Minister Nalin Fernando has granted permission for the import of eggs until April 20, 2024, emphasizing the need to address the current shortage. The Minister assured consumers that the imported eggs would be available at a fixed price of Rs. 35 each. However, due to the existing scarcity, some places are reportedly selling eggs at Rs. 65.

Acknowledging the challenges posed by the high demand and scarcity during the festive season, Minister Nalin Fernando expressed the intention to continue importing eggs to meet consumer needs. He emphasized the importance of ensuring a stable supply of eggs during the upcoming New Year celebrations.
