A photo is circulating on social media stating the current situation in Borella, meaning Sri Lankans are celebrating happiness by cooking milk rice after the death of State Minister Sanath Nishantha. Our fact-check found that this is not a photograph of a time when the people of Borella celebrated the happiness after the death of Sanath Nishantha. The photo was first posted in 2022. Then Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned from his post in 2022 abd after the announcement, the people of the Panchikawatta area were happy and cooked milk rice on the road. The photo was taken during that event.

Below is a fact check carried out by Fact-Crescendo to find out the accuracy of a misleading note circulating on social media due to the news of the death of State Minister Sanath Nishantha.

After the death of State Minister Sanath Nishantha in a vehicle accident on January 25, the photo that was used to show that happy people of Borella are cooking milk rice on the road is not a photo taken on January 25 but that the then Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned from his post in 2022.
