Sri Lanka’s navy and a band of volunteers from nearby villages have managed to rescue 10 pilot whales that became stranded in the Kalpitiya area this morning, but at least 3 injured animals were found dead.

Villagers, Navy and Coast Guard launched an operation to send whales back to the sea in Kalpitiya.

According to the villagers about 14 whales were washed up on the beach Kalpitiya Kandakuliya this morning and three of them died. Villagers say that 11 baby whales were sent to the sea with great effort.

The Wildlife, Coastal Conservation Department, Navy and the villagers are launching operations to send whales back to the sea in Kalpitiya.
