Due to heavy rains in the catchment areas, the spill gates at the Upper Kotmale and Wimalasurendra reservoirs were opened today.

The Nuwara Eliya district Disaster Management Centre office said that 12 spill gates of the Upper Kotmale reservoir were opened this afternoon.

They said the remaining spill gates will be opened automatically if more rains reach the Upper Kothmale catchment areas and the water capacity increases.

People in the low-lying areas are warned to be vigilant for sudden floods.

Meanwhile, the spill gates of the Wimalasurendra reservoir were opened due to the high rainfall in the Norton Bridge catchment areas.

With the opening of the spill gates, the upper level of the Kelani Ganga has increased, the reservoir duty officer said.
