Update – All schools in the Western Province have been given approval to resume for all grades from March 29, Monday. Earlier it was planned to open several grades after the April holidays on April 19. But the new date will be March 29. Further, pre-schools in the Western Province will also re-open on the 29th of March 2021.

All schools in the Western Province have been given approval to resume for all grades from March 29, Monday. Earlier it was planned to open several grades after the April holidays on April 19. But the new date will be March 29. Grade 5, Grade 11 and A/L classes in Western Province started from March 15. The Ministry of Health has granted the approval to the Ministry of Education. Most grades in schools in the Western Province were closed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

All schools across the island for all grades reopened on Monday March 15 except for the schools in the Western Province, Education Minister Prof. G.L Pieris said. Meanwhile health officials recommend to reopen Grade 5, Grade 11 and A/L classes in Western Province from March 15.

He added that schools in the western province will be reopened only after the health recommendations are received.

The Minister further said that health recommendations pertaining to the Western Province will be submitted by the health officials within two days. Accordingly the schools in Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara will be reopened.

Minister Pieris said that the decision on reopening schools in the western Province will be determined based on the approval of the Director General of Health Services.
