Sri Lanka has been elected to the executive board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) with 144 votes, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said.

The election to the 58-member body for the 2023-27 period took place at the 42nd UNESCO General Conference in Paris on Wednesday. 

Sri Lanka secured its position on the Executive Board with 144 votes out of the 188 member states that participated in the voting process.

In the Asia-Pacific Region, six out of nine candidates were elected by UNESCO member states. Alongside Sri Lanka, the other countries from the region include Pakistan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Korea and Australia.
