There is a significant increase in the number of road accidents and road accidents related deaths in Sri Lanka according to Police Spokesperson. So far this year about 600 persons died due to road traffic accidents. Most of victims were motorcycle riders & pillion riders, Three-wheel drivers & passengers and pedestrians. According to past police statistics, April 10th to 20th considered the highest number of road accidents reporting dates in Sri Lanka.

The total number of road accidents reported in the year 2021 was about 22,000. The death toll was 2,470 and about 14,000 injuries reported. In 2022, 19,740 road accidents reported in Sri Lanka, 2,371 are fatal accidents, according to the Police Media Unit.

During last 24 hour (April 11) 6 deaths have been reported due to road traffic accidents in Sri Lanka. Most of victims were Three-wheeler passengers and motorcycle riders & pillion riders.

The police spokesman said it is possible to save those lives and requested the motorists to drive in strict accordance with the rules of the road and to drive carefully and attentively on the road.

According to Sri Lanka Police statistics about seven to eight people die each day due to accidents. Some time this figure goes to 11 deaths per day. Due to road accidents about 40 persons injured each day. The total number of vehicles registered in the country recorded as 8.3 million and out that 60% listed as Motorcycles. In 2017 Sri Lanka’s motor vehicle population was 7.2 million.
