Sri Lanka were eliminated from contention for the World Test Championship final after New Zealand fashioned a remarkable two-wicket win in the first Test in Christchurch today.

Sri Lanka needed nine wickets on the final day of play, but their pursuit was complicated by rain and a wet outfield that effectively wiped out an entire session of play.

When play did start, Sri Lanka were left with 52 overs to bowl ou New Zealand who themselves needed 257 runs for victory.
