New WFP Representative Presents Credentials to Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister
Colombo LankaXpress – Philip Ward, the newly-appointed Representative and Country Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Sri Lanka, formally presented his credentials to Hon. Vijitha Herath, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, at the Ministry premises.
During the meeting, Mr. Ward reaffirmed WFP’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka in strengthening food systems, improving nutrition, and building resilience among vulnerable communities.
“I am honoured to take up this role at a time when Sri Lanka is navigating both progress and persistent challenges in food security and nutrition,” Mr. Ward said. “WFP remains steadfast in its support to national efforts, working hand in hand with partners to ensure access to nutritious food, especially for those most at risk.”
The discussions also covered WFP’s Country Strategic Plan and Sri Lanka’s ongoing efforts to reduce malnutrition and enhance community resilience in the face of climate and economic challenges. Mr. Ward highlighted WFP’s role as a trusted partner in ensuring that no one is left behind on the path to recovery and long-term stability.
Bringing over three decades of experience in humanitarian and development work with WFP, including senior leadership roles in field operations and strategic partnerships, Mr. Ward is well-positioned to guide WFP’s efforts in Sri Lanka with renewed focus and vision.
