Sri Lanka Navy apprehended 07 persons who were suspected to be attempting to illegally migrate from the country by sea, during a night patrol conducted in seas off Talaimannar on 06th July 2022. Apart from these individuals, the Navy also nabbed 02 human smugglers who plotted this illegal act.

Sri Lanka Navy has been conducting regular operations and patrols covering the sea and coastal areas around the island with the aim of suppressing illegal migration and other forms of illegal activities. As an extension of these efforts, an Inshore Patrol Craft attached to SLNS Thammanna in the North Central Naval Command made this interception having spotted a suspicious dinghy off Talaimannar, during a night patrol conducted on 06th July 2022. Accordingly, 07 individuals who were suspected to be attempting to illegally migrate from the country by sea, and 02 human smugglers were apprehended by the Navy with the dinghy used for this illegal activity. Among the 07 would-be illegal immigrants were; 01 male, 03 females and 03 children.

The apprehended individuals who are from 09 months to 43 years of age were identified as residents of Kilinochchi and Pesalai areas. They were handed over to the Talaimannar Police for onward legal action.

For the purpose of making fast money, smugglers cheat the innocent and organize this kind of unethical enterprise using unsafe vessels. As such, Navy urges the public to refrain from risking their lives by engaging in perilous sea voyages and be victims before the law.
