2023 Kandy Esala Perahera commenced on August 21 and will last till August 30 in Kandy, Sri Dalada Maligawa. This year, Kandy Esala Perahera will be held with the participation of spectators. In 2020 and 2021 the Perahera was not allowed for spectators due to COVID outbreak in Sri Lanka.
About 100 elephants and about 5000 traditional artists including dancers to perform at the procession. Kandy Esala Perahera Procession consider as one of the world’s oldest religious festivals.
The Chief Custodian of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy has declared the dates of the Esala Procession 2023. Starting the Esala Festival the first Kumbal Perahera will take to the streets on August 21 and parade the streets for five days until the August 25th. First Randoli Perahera will take to the streets on August 26th to 30th.
