In a recent statement, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe strongly condemned the burning of a Quran in Sweden, emphasizing that such actions are a direct violation of the Freedom of Worship. The President further called upon Western nations to respect the value system of the Global South and urged them to avoid allowing the spread of disorder under the pretext of Freedom of Expression.

The incident in question, which took place in Sweden, sparked outrage and drew international attention.

Earlier Sri Lanka Foreign Ministry also issued a statement saying “Sri Lanka condemns the burning of the sacred text of Islam – the Holy Quran – outside a mosque in Sweden during the Eid al Adha celebrated by Muslims worldwide.

In the interest of national and international peace and harmony, all countries and individuals have an obligation to prevent acts of religious intolerance and hatred which lead to polarization among communities”.
