A total of 42 suspects have been arrested during an island-wide police operation targeting individuals who commit acts of abuse against children and women on public transport.

The operation was carried out yesterday between 08:00-10:00 and 17:00-19:00, under the instructions of Acting Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon.

Accordingly, police officers in civilian clothes travelled on buses, with special attention on streets, bus stops and railway stations.

Accordingly, 18 persons were arrested for abuse against children and women on public transport while another 24 suspects including five pickpocketers were arrested.

The Public Security Ministry said the primary objective of this operation was to combat sexual abuse within public transport services, addressing the increasing number of complaints received by police stations on a daily basis.
