Machine capacity insufficient to print driving licenses: Commissioner General

The main reason for the delay in issuing driving licence cards is not having sufficient printing capacity with the existing printing machines with the Department of Motor Traffic, its Commissioner General Nishantha Anuruddha Weerasinghe said.

He said a Cabinet Paper has been sent for the purchase of five driving license card printing machines.

The DMT currently has five machines for printing polurposes and they are not sufficient to meet the demand, the Commissioner General said.

Due to the lack of cards and insufficient printing machines the issuing of a total of 800,000 cards are still pending, he said. ‘Currently, the department prints 4,000 cards per day.

It has to print more than 4,000 cards per day to if issuing of temporary driving licences is to be stopped,” the Commissioner General added.
