India Launches Stage II of Phase IV of Indian Housing Project in Sri Lanka, Strengthening Ties and Uplifting Indian Origin Tamil Community
The Government of India officially launched Stage II of Phase IV of the Indian Housing Project in Bandarawela on October 12, 2025, reaffirming its long-standing commitment to the welfare of the Indian Origin Tamil community in Sri Lanka.
The event was graced by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha, alongside several Sri Lankan ministers and dignitaries. The initiative marks another milestone in India’s extensive development partnership with Sri Lanka, focusing on housing, education, healthcare, and community empowerment.
Under the project, India has committed support for 14,000 houses, including 10,000 under Phase IV, with 1,100 currently under construction. To date, India’s housing assistance in Sri Lanka extends to 65,000 houses across all 25 districts — a grant worth over LKR 64 billion.
High Commissioner Jha described the project as more than just providing homes — it is about building futures and strengthening the bonds between India and Sri Lanka. He also highlighted India’s broader initiatives such as the Dickoya multi-specialty hospital, Mahatma Gandhi International Centre in Matale, and education projects in plantation schools.
The High Commissioner reaffirmed that India’s support for the Indian Origin Tamil community is part of its overall commitment to Sri Lanka’s development, reflecting the deep and enduring friendship between the two nations.
