Heavy Showers and Strong Winds Expected Over Parts of Sri Lanka Due to Active Southwest Monsoon

The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather alert as the active southwest monsoon condition is expected to intensify from today (June 10), bringing enhanced rainfall and strong winds across several parts of the island.

Showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and North-western provinces, as well as in Galle and Matara districts. Some areas in these regions, including Nuwara Eliya and Kandy, may experience heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm.

Meanwhile, several spells of showers are also likely in the Northern Province, Anuradhapura, and Hambantota districts. Showers or thundershowers may develop in isolated areas of Badulla, Ampara, and Batticaloa districts during the afternoon or night.

Strong winds of around 50 kmph are expected, especially over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central, North-western, and Southern provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee district.

The public is advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions against potential damages caused by strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. Authorities also urge the public to stay updated with future forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology.
