The National School of Business Management (NSBM) has secured approval from the Cabinet of Ministers to establish a Faculty of Medicine. Under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, and the Sri Lanka Medical Council, NSBM aims to confer MBBS degrees through this fully self-financed institution.
The faculty plans to enroll 500 students annually, catering to both local and international candidates for the degree course. Notably, the Homagama Base Hospital has been earmarked as the designated government hospital for clinical training, with the Cabinet of Ministers having already granted approval for its use by NSBM medical students.
To streamline resources and enhance facilities, a mechanism is in the works to reserve Homagama Base Hospital for the clinical training of medical faculty students and the provision of professor unit facilities. NSBM has committed to funding the development of Homagama Base Hospital to meet the standards outlined by the Sri Lanka Medical Council.
In a significant development, the Cabinet of Ministers has given the green light to transfer the Homagama Base Hospital under the purview of the Ministry of Health and upgrade it to the status of a teaching hospital. This move reflects the government’s commitment to fostering excellence in medical education and providing state-of-the-art facilities for the next generation of healthcare professionals.
