Digital Journalists Association of Sri Lanka (DJASL) Officially Launched in Colombo

The Digital Journalists Association of Sri Lanka (DJASL) was officially launched today in Colombo, marking a significant milestone in uniting journalists working within the country’s growing digital media landscape. The association aims to bring together digital media professionals to collectively address the evolving challenges faced by the industry, both locally and globally.

Speaking at the event, DJASL Adviser Mandana Ismail Abeywickrema stated that the association was formed with the objective of responding collectively to the new and emerging challenges within the digital media space. She emphasized the need for solidarity among digital journalists as the media environment continues to transform rapidly.

DJASL Chairperson Manjula Basnayake, in his address, highlighted that the association provides a platform to tackle global issues as a united front. He pointed out that the DJASL will work towards finding solutions to pressing concerns such as the spread of misinformation, regulatory issues, and questions surrounding digital media ethics.

“Just as the government needs our support, we too need the support of the government,” Basnayake said, adding that the establishment of DJASL allows for a structured and unified approach to engage with the state on matters related to media regulation and reform. He also revealed that the association has already begun the process of drafting a Code of Ethics tailored specifically for digital journalists in Sri Lanka.

DJASL is an inclusive body that welcomes both full-time and part-time digital journalists, representing Sri Lanka’s diverse demographic makeup—including geographic, ethnic, linguistic, religious, cultural, and gender pluralism. The association also commits to advocating for the rights and interests of marginalized communities often ignored by mainstream media.

As it grows, DJASL will continue to work with the government and other media stakeholders on issues related to digital safety, media freedom, and policy reforms, serving as a key representative in state and stakeholder consultations related to media legislation.
