China Delivers Emergency Humanitarian Aid for Sri Lanka’s Flood Relief

The Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka, together with the Ministry of Defence, held a handover ceremony for emergency humanitarian relief supplies to support Sri Lanka’s flood recovery efforts. The handover certificate was signed by Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong and Defence Secretary Sampath Thuyacontha, with Embassy Counsellor Tang Yandi also in attendance.

Following the recent floods, China initially provided USD 100,000 in emergency cash assistance, later adding relief materials worth 10 million RMB based on Sri Lanka’s specific needs. Ambassador Qi highlighted that this support reflects the deep friendship between the two nations and China’s firm backing of Sri Lanka’s newly elected government. He also expressed readiness to share China’s expertise in post-disaster reconstruction and to enhance cooperation in areas such as satellite meteorology and disaster early warning.

Defence Secretary Thuyacontha expressed gratitude for China’s timely and generous support, noting that the bond between the two countries is enduring and has been strengthened in challenging times. He reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to working closely with China to build a safer and more resilient future.
