China, Sri Lanka Reaffirm Friendship at 80th Anniversary Commemoration of Victory in World Anti-Fascist War

Colombo, LankaXpress August 20, 2025 – A reception to mark the 80th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War was held at the BMICH Colombo, with the participation of dignitaries, diplomats, and senior officials from Sri Lanka and China.

The event, hosted by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Sri Lanka, was attended by former President Maithripala Sirisena, Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment Upali Pannilage, and Mr. Indrananda Abeysekera, President of the Association for Sri Lanka-China Social and Cultural Cooperation, along with members of parliament, the diplomatic corps, and distinguished guests.

Delivering remarks at the reception, Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka H.E. Qi Zhenhong highlighted the enduring significance of the war’s victory, noting that it not only marked the defeat of fascism but also laid the foundation for the establishment of the United Nations. He stressed that the sacrifices of the Chinese people—who endured 35 million casualties and combated the bulk of Japanese forces—played a decisive role in the global victory against fascism.

“The truth of history must be remembered,” Ambassador Qi said, emphasizing that peace is not a natural gift but the outcome of humanity’s courage and unity. He warned against the dangers of militarism, Cold War mentality, and power politics, urging nations to uphold the principles of the UN Charter and strengthen multilateral cooperation.

The Ambassador also reaffirmed the longstanding China-Sri Lanka friendship, citing ongoing collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). He pointed to projects such as the Hambantota Port, Colombo Port City, and expanding cultural exchanges as evidence of the deepening bilateral partnership.

“From the Great Wall of China to the Sigiriya Lion Rock, let the faith in peace stand like an eternal rock, and let the fruits of development benefit all our descendants,” he stated, underscoring China’s commitment to a shared future of peace, prosperity, and cooperation with Sri Lanka.

The reception concluded with a pledge to honor historical memory, safeguard peace, and work together toward international fairness and justice.
