The eagerly anticipated Population and Housing Census, conducted every decade, was officially launched at the Presidential Secretariat today. What sets this year’s census apart is the introduction of tablet computers for data collection, alongside the traditional printed documents.

In a symbolic gesture, the Presidential Secretariat became the inaugural entry in the 2023 Census, emphasizing the significance of this nationwide undertaking.

This technological leap introduces tablet computers into the data collection process, promising to make the census more efficient and accurate. Enumerators will now use digital tools to record data, reducing the likelihood of errors and expediting the overall process.

This will be the Sri Lanka’s 15th Census of Population and Housing.

The last Census, which was conducted in 2012, was the 14th in the Census series in Sri Lanka and it encompasses the entire country after a period of 31 years, counting from 1981.
