# Possible Cyclone “Arnab” Developing in Bay of Bengal: No Direct Impact Expected on Sri Lanka

Updated : **A potential cyclone could develop in the Bay of Bengal next week, while Sri Lanka is expected to experience heavy rainfall due to a separate low-pressure system.**

Weather models indicate that a **low-pressure area could form near the Andaman Sea around October 24 or 25**. The system could intensify into a depression by **October 27** and potentially develop into a cyclone within the following two days.

If the system reaches cyclone strength, it could be named **“Arnab.”** Current forecasts suggest the system may move towards the **north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coast of India** by the end of October.

**Will Cyclone Arnab affect Sri Lanka?**

**No direct impact from the potential cyclone is currently expected in Sri Lanka.** Forecast models indicate that the system is likely to track towards the eastern coast of India rather than Sri Lanka.

However, Sri Lanka is expected to experience **separate heavy rainfall and unsettled weather** over the coming days.

**Sri Lanka weather forecast**

Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology says a **low-level atmospheric disturbance near the island could develop into a low-pressure area within the next 24 hours**.

Under its influence, rainfall is expected to increase across Sri Lanka and the surrounding sea areas from **October 21 onwards**.

**Rainfall of more than 100 mm** is possible in some areas of the:

- Western Province

- Sabaragamuwa Province

- Central Province

- North-Western Province

- Northern Province

- Southern Province

- Anuradhapura District

The latest forecast also indicates the possibility of **30–50 mm of rain in some areas over the next four to five days**.

**What should people in Sri Lanka do?**

The public, particularly **fishing and naval communities**, are advised to remain alert and follow updates issued by the **Sri Lanka Department of Meteorology**.

The track and intensity of the potential **Cyclone “Arnab”** remain uncertain, and forecasts could change as the system develops.( LankaXpress)
